Our best students compete. They all do well. So are they better at TKD than students who do not compete? Generally they are. There are exceptions, but they are rare. Competition at tournaments benefits the students in several ways. First, they learn confidence. It comes from going to a place where there are hundreds of TKD students. They step in the ring and perform their forms with many eyes on them. That adds pressure. They still perform in spite of the pressure. It usually only takes one or two tournaments before the student gains a great deal of confidence.  Sparring even more so as they are competing against others they do not know. This is where they learn indomitable spirit. Students who do not compete will gain those same qualities. However, they usually take significantly longer to realize it in themselves. They will not ever learn about the larger family of martial arts and its positive influence that broaden their character and make them realize that as a student, they are part of a very large martial arts community.

We are Auburn and the surrounding towns’ best kept secret. Our students are among the best students in Illinois. We stand shoulder to shoulder with any other TKD school we compete against. I truly believe that the students who compete get much more out of taekwondo than those who don’t. So give some consideration about entering or having your child(ren) compete in TKD. Let your kids reap the deep, rich life rewards taekwondo competition has to offer.
